GD!

Gosh Darnit I have Gestational Diabetes!

I failed my 3 hour glucose test with high flying numbers. I'm very disappointed and have shed many tears over this new obstacle in my pregnancy. We better have a good baby or our plan of having 3 kiddos will be down to 1. Seriously, why can't I catch a break here? So now I can be "that friend" who you can talk to about fertility issues, miscarriage, AND GD. Ask away! (can you sense my bitterness??)

My check up went fine yesterday despite the bad news I received on Wednesday. The midwife kindly reminded me that I do not have the body shape for diabetes. In fact, I only put on 4 pounds since my last visit- 13 total. I would not call myself obese. Probably my mom's gene in me is causing this to happen. My weight is good, my belly is measuring to size, and all my other bloodwork was normal.

So where do I go from here? I have my glucose testing device (glucometer) already- that thing you need to prick your finger with and see your levels. I have to do that FOUR times a day. I realize I do acupuncture and have had more than enough blood tests in the past 2 years, but drawing blood myself will be tough. I meet with the nutritionist on Monday to hear how to use my glucometer and what my new diet looks like. My run with milkshakes and pasta was great while it lasted. Bring on salads... and a chef to make them for me :)~

Mer - just another bump on the pregnancy highway. Hopefully you wont have insulin injections like I did - 2 shots/day and bloodwork every week - my arm was like a junkies. I spoke to our nutritionist today at work and she is diabetic and said FIBER is good for your blood sugar and reminded me that the hormone factor, etc. contributes to the highs/lows of blood sugar. Yes, it's probably true diabetic women do have larger babies, but I don't think my c-section was caused by the diabetes. Apparently, baby #1 was in distress and not moving very quickly. (Personally,at 1:00 AM, I think the doctor was tired of waiting for me and ordered the c-section. All ended well and my blood sugar was completely normal within 6 hours after delivery. So hang in there, follow the diet instructions and you'll do FINE!
